Meeting Christian Siriano!

While doing the public relations for a breast cancer benefit called Steps to the Cure, I recently got the chance to meet Christian Siriano. He was a guest emcee for the event. Steps to the Cure is a breast cancer benefit fashion show in which all of the models are breast cancer survivors. The event was at the American Visionary Art Museum (note the pink poodle behind us made entirely of tu-tus.) Amy, Christian with his signature pose..., and me!

You may have also seen this poodle at the Kinetic Sculpture Race, which is Baltimore's annual celebration of people powered mobile art. This pink poodle now sits in the AVAMuseum (as seen behind us above). The rules are that sculptures must be human-powered. No pulling, pushing, paddling, or other propulsive method is allowed. Stored energy is allowed for non-propulsive purposes only. It is legal to get assistance from the natural power of water, wind, sun, and gravity. - Just something interesting...

In case you don't know who Christian is!: Christian Siriano is an American fashion designer and the winner of the fourth season of American reality show, Project Runway. Siriano is also the show's youngest winner. Project Runway is an American reality television series on the Bravo network which focuses on fashion design. The contestants compete with each other to create the best clothes and are usually restricted in time, materials, and theme. Their designs are judged and one or more designers are eliminated each week. Here are some of his latest designs (on the runway) available on his website:

In the news

I guess dad was right to watch Bella closely while she is in the back yard alone. I never thought that a bird might actually get her, I thought he was just joking. I guess it is true that it can actually happen! Check out the story here:

Ladies first in puppy play

A new study in the news at The Discovery Channel reveals that in puppy play, it's ladies first. Even if the male has a physical advantage, young male dogs playing with female dogs will often let the female win.

"Male dogs sometimes place themselves in potentially disadvantageous positions that could make them more vulnerable to attack, and researchers suspect the opportunity to play may be more important to them than winning." "We found that self-handicapping tends to occur in conjunction with play bows," lead author Camille Ward told Discovery News.
"A play bow is a signal that dogs use when they want to communicate playful intentions to a potential play partner," added Ward, a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan and director of About Dogs LLC. She is also author of the forthcoming book, 'Relationship-Based Dog Training.' While males were less likely to initiate play with other males, they seemed eager to play with females, and would go to all sorts of lengths to keep the play going.
They might lose the game in the short run, but they could win at love in the future.

PO fing.

So, today at lunch time - Merlot almost died. And unfortunately, I am not kidding. I came home for lunch like I do everyday. But today, I let Merlot out of her crate and she DARTED for the water bowl in the kitchen (this bowl holds exactly two cups of water). She starts drinking out of it - and I just thought she was thirsty. She drank the WHOLE two cups of water in a matter of about 45 seconds.

I was watching her drink it the entire time, just thinking she was thirsty. A few moments later, I look down and she is shaking really hard, crying very loud toward me and her belly looked like she swallowed a soft ball - it was HUGE and distended. I immediately go into shock, as I have read about Dachshunds sometimes prone to getting Gastric Torsion, commonly called "the bloat." For those who don't know, bloat is the second leading killer to dogs, the first being cancer (better explained below).

Dogs can get this after eating/drinking and then running around immediately afterward. The stomach swells, rotating 90° to 360°, twisting between its fixed attachments at the esophagus and at the the upper intestine. The twisting stomach traps air, food, and water in the stomach. The bloated stomach obstructs veins in the abdomen, leading to low blood pressure, shock, and damage to internal organs. It can kill a dog in a matter of minutes if not treated immediately.

I immediately call the vet, and since they are AMAZING - the nurse stays on the phone with me the entire time. She asked me to take Merlot outside but not let her run around for five minutes. And if she did not throw up in five minutes, to take her to the ER ASAP.

Three minutes later, Merlotjo throws up a BUNCH of water a food and things I didn't even know she ate in the first place! I am immediately relieved. Her tummy goes back to normal size and she stops shaking soon after and stops crying.

Now she is one dehydrated pup, and we are slowly nursing her back to health with a little help from pedialyte and good nutrition.

Say a prayer for Merlotjo. ; - )
Learn from my mistake!

Bridget

New baby brother?

Could this be Merlot's new brother?

DogFEST 2008

On Saturday, Jay and I took Morgan (Jay's Schnoodle), and Merlot to the DogFEST! It was a BLAST. I have NEVER seen SO many dogs in one place at one time in my entire life!

Driving up to DogFEST, there were SO many cars and dogs of ALL kinds!:
Merlot can't wait...
And Morgan actually JUMPED out of the window, she was so excited. Thank God we were stopped in the line of cars!
"Quit takin' picshas of me mudda, I want to go make sum fwends!"
There were two big pools you could stand in line for and let your dog jump in and swim around!
Merlot steps out onto the "Four Legged Beach Club"!
Morgan looks out into the field where all the other dogs are playing!
Bobbing for Bones!
Merlot's strategy: drink all the water and empty the pool so she can just pick up the bone and not have to get her face all wet!
Merlot is strategizing and Morgan is whispering tips in her ear about which bone to go for.
Morgan and Jay, sitting in a tree...
"Dat's wite, mudda. I got a awawd!"
Merlot won 3rd place in the 20 yard dash, 2nd place in the Doxie 20 yard dash, and a participant award for succeeding in bobbing for bones!
"I shoulda won dat 'best kissa' contest, mudda!"
Merlotjo's favorite pastime, kissing Jay's face!
Running in the field toward the pool!
Taking a break from running in the field. I made them run back and forth toward me three times while I was trying to get a picture!
"Halow!"
"Dis my good side, mudda."

All in all, we had a GREAT time. And an added benefit: we had two VERY tired pups on our hands that night. ; - )

Hope you enjoyed the pictures! God bless the Humane Society!

alligator

Everyone felt sorry for the Israelis. No one else thought this weird animal stood a chance against the growling beast in the Arab camp. The bookies predicted the Arabs would win in less than a minute. The cages were opened. The Dachshund waddled toward the center of the ring.

The Arab dog leapt from his cage and charged the giant wiener-dog. As he got to within an inch of the Israeli dog, the Dachshund opened its jaws and swallowed the Arab beast in one bite. There was nothing left but a small bit of fur from the killer dog's tail.

The Arabs approached the Israelis, shaking their heads in disbelief. “We do not understand,” said their leader. “Our top scientists and breeders worked for five years with the meanest, biggest Dobermans and Rottweilers. They developed a killing machine.” “Really?” the Israeli General replied. “For five years, we’ve had a team of Jewish plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills working to make an alligator look like a Dachshund.”

Confession Day

Well, it is Wednesday - and Wednesday is confession day! That being said, I would like to confess that I have been eating Pillsbury toaster strudel pastries for breakfast, lunch and dinner for about three weeks straight now. Yes, I'm afraid so. And not even different flavors. The same old strawberry ones with the same cream cheese icing.

I know, I could not have picked anything more unhealthy to have a craving for. Well, that's not entirely true; there was that one time, I ate corn bread for breakfast, lunch and dinner for about two straight months. And then there was that time I made chili over and over again, and ate that for every meal for about a month. I don't know what is wrong with me, but when I crave something, I cannot get enough of it until I've had enough of it! (If that makes sense.) I guess I have my metabolism to thank...

I can tell you one thing: I cannot WAIT until this craving is over. Which is a good sign that it's probably beginning to phase out...

I wonder, what will be next?
